The ABC's of DEI
Diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, have been popular buzzwords since 2020. However, there are many misconceptions about their meaning and intent. Diversity, equity and inclusion are not challenges or threats. They offer an opportunity.
If you are like other roofing professionals, your company has experienced a labor shortage. I believe DEI is the answer to that problem. DEI strategies can strengthen your business and employee experience; you just need to do the work.
Construction Working Minds Summit 2023
Goals of Summit:
Presenting on:
Mental Health First Aid for the Construction Industry
In 2020, a mission-driven group of volunteers from across the construction industry came together with the goal of saving lives. They collaborated to launch the inaugural Suicide Prevention Week for the industry — a week dedicated to raising awareness about the higher-than-average number of suicides in the construction industry, and to providing resources to help prevent those deaths.
Every year, during September — National Suicide Prevention Month — the construction industry will dedicate a week to raising awareness about the unique challenges workers face in construction that lead to suicide and what we can do to prevent it. Together, we can save lives.

Mandy McIntyre of 1st Choice Roofing and Christee Holbrook of Graham Roofing join Heidi Ellsworth to talk about how you can start the mental health conversation in your business and where to find resources.
The construction industry has the highest rate of suicide in any industry, and we are going to talk about why and how to stop it.
Please join us to learn how to help someone that is hurting, including yourself, and how to make this a regular topic of conversation in your company.
When it comes to diversity and inclusion in roofing few are as passionate as Mandy McIntyre.
McIntyre, recently named vice president of 1st Choice Roofing Co., began her adult career at the company as a project coordinator. In the years McIntyre has been at 1st Choice Roofing, they have almost tripled the amount of employees in-house and on the field.
Over the years, Mandy has become a respected figure in the roofing industry by empowering women to continue the path. Mandy wasn’t new to construction, she often visited job sites as a child with her father, who was a General Contractor and even helped in the office.
Season 3, Episode 11 of Coffee Conversations, sponsored by SRS Distribution, had us meeting with industry leaders live at the International Roofing Expo! For this episode, our COO Karen Edwards spoke with RCS Influencers Joe Hoffman, John Kiesel and Mandy McIntyre about how they are navigating issues in the roofing industry.
McIntyre, operations officer at 1st Choice Roofing, talked about how her company is navigating COVID-19 and changing policies regarding workplace safety. She highly suggests that companies have a policy plan in place and in writing. The plan should highlight whatever vaccine mandates the company has in place and what protocols when an employee tests positive for COVID-19.
